For thirty-five girls, the Selection is the chance of a lifetime. The opportunity to escape the life laid out for them since birth. To be swept up in a world of glittering gowns and priceless jewels. To live in a palace and compete for the heart of gorgeous Prince Maxon.

But for America Singer, being Selected is a nightmare. It means turning her back on her secret love with Aspen, who is a caste below her. Leaving her home to enter a fierce competition for a crown she doesn't want. Living in a palace that is constantly threatened by violent rebel attacks.

Then America meets Prince Maxon. Gradually, she starts to question all the plans she's made for herself—and realizes that the life she's always dreamed of may not compare to a future she never imagined.

The Selection is a contest with thirty-five girls chosen randomly who will be given a chance of a lifetime to fight on becoming the wife of  Maxon, Crown Prince of Illea. A country who rose from the ashes of United States of America.

Illea's governmental system is divided from one to eight. (One being the royal family and the Eight being the homeless) America is a lowly five and on the earlier parts of the book, she fell in love with a six, which though not forbidden is very unlikely to happen.

There are numerous ways on having a higher rank and it is by marrying someone with a higher rank,(only applicable for females)or by buying your way into a higher rank.

The book was a cross between The Bachelor and numerous Reverse Harem animes. Illea was very conservative in its beliefs and some of their rules was very preposterous.

America was sometimes very self-centered and it was very irritating. I haven't had a strong connection with her while I was reading so I wasn't very impressed with her character. Maxon wasn't what I was expecting. He was such a cutipie under his manly exterior. Aspen was someone I loved from the very start since I felt that the love she has for America was pure.
All the other contestants were all different characters and some are very irritating but there are also a few who are likeable as well.

An okay read which would have been better if there were few minor editing made.

  1. This book has been moving up and down my to-read list for awhile. I'll probably check it out for real sometime this summer. Bummer that you didn't enjoy it as much as you were expecting. I hate when that happens!

    1. You should still try to read it Katie. Maybe it was because of my personal preferences that I was not able to like this book. Though let me tell you, the second book was worse than this!

  2. You sound really disappointed by this book! - sorry that you didn't enjoy it as much as you hoped. I have only recently heard of this series so I can't share my thoughts, but I think I will at least give the first book a go! (and I really love the cover!)
